The Interview

Preparing for an Interview

Your first impression with an employer is with your resume and cover letter. If you are successful, the employer will call you for an interview. This page will help you prepare for an interview.

During the interview, you must convince the employer that you are the right person for the job.

The employer will ask you questions in the interview to learn more about your experiences and skills. To help you prepare for the interview, study the questions that they may give you and/or visit the Job Interview Questions website for more information regarding interviews in general. The interview is also a chance for you to ask questions like how much the position pays.

University of Waterloo's Centre for Career Action has information on interviews to help you practice your interview skills.

The Employment Resource Centre has interview related resources in different languages.

During the Interview

In the interview, an employer is going to question your skills, and past jobs. It is important to brag about your skills, achievements, and education. Don’t be modest and humble. For interview tips, visit settlement.org or about.com.

Bring your references and any documentation for the job in a portfolio. Your reference list is three contacts, usually past or current employers, or community members.

The employer will call your references to ask questions about you and your skills. Do not include a person on your reference list that will talk badly about you.

Dress for Success

How you look at the interview is very important. Wear clothes that are professional and neat. These tips will help you decide what to wear at your interview.

After the Interview

You should send a thank you letter to the employer after the interview. This shows you were grateful for the interview. It keeps you in the employer's mind while their making the decision for the position.
