Identity Theft

Identity theft is when your personal information is used by someone without your knowledge to commit either a crime (such as fraud or theft) or purchase products.

There are many ways that identity thieves can steal your personal information. Learn how to protect you and your family.

There are signs to look for if you have been a victim of identity theft. If any of your government-issued documents have been stolen or lost, call the proper authorities.

Consumer Protection

You may find yourself entering into various contracts. These contracts could be renting a home, buying a car or joining a fitness club. It is important to know your rights and the law about contracts. You should know your rights before entering into a contract.

Under the Consumer Protection Act, 2002, you have the right to cancel an agreement. If an owner has made a false or misleading or representation about the goods or services you agreed to buy or lease, you might be able to get your money back.

A contract has a cooling off period. You have the right to cancel (for any reason) within 10 days of having a written copy of the agreement.

To learn about contract visit your Consumer Protection Toolbox.

If you feel that you are being treated unfairly with a contract, call the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services.

To learn more about your rights contact the local Better Business Bureau.
