Quality of Life

Chatham-Kent offers a wide variety of benefits to residents young and old. Residents can take advantage of the many big-city amenities while enjoying a smaller-town atmosphere. Life here is safe, affordable, active and exciting! Here’s just a few of the great things Chatham-Kent has in store for you.

 Climate

We have some of the best weather in Canada. Summers are warm yet temperate, with lots of sun and a longer-than-average outdoor growing season for gardeners. Moderate winters bring some snow, but not nearly as much as parts further north, and are generally not as cold. Visit Environment Canada for more on local climate and weather.

Cost of Living

Chatham-Kent boasts some of the most affordable housing in Ontario. Buying a house, renting an apartment and paying property taxes cost you less here and are far below the prices in Toronto.

Our location in the middle of Southwestern Ontario also means that everyday needs such as clothing, food and other basics are cheap and plentiful.

Culture & Recreation

For a sample of all the fun and excitement our communities have to offer, visit the Enjoying Chatham-Kent section of the Welcome Newcomers website.

Education

The Ontario school system is one of the best in the world. All children are entitled to an education and attend outstanding public, separate and private elementary and secondary schools. Many post-secondary school options are available, including the University of Guelph – Ridgetown Campus, St. Clair College and other adult and continuing education institutions.

Geography

Chatham-Kent is home farms with rich and fertile soils. Agriculture is a significant part of our economy and community. Residents enjoy year-round fresh produce, celebrated by the popular “Buy Local, Buy Fresh” program. Our proximity to Windsor, London, Toronto, the U.S. and Lake Erie provides shipping advantages to local manufacturers and a boon of shopping opportunities for day-trippers.

Health

Chatham-Kent Health Alliance operates hospital services out of two locations: the main campus in Chatham and Sydenham Campus in Wallaceburg. Throughout the municipality you’ll find many family doctors, specialists and full-service clinics to care for you and your family. We also have a large complement of professionals offering elderly care and spa facilities and alternative medicine.
