The Municipality of Chatham-Kent, operating under a single tier government system, was created in 1998 with the amalgamation of 23 communities, 13 public utility commissions, and 5 police forces. With the amalgamation, the Municipality provides many services including public health, social, water, hydro and wastewater, emergency, economic development, library, cultural and recreational services.
Chatham-Kent, located in South-Western Ontario, serves a population base of 110,000 citizens over a 2,494 square kilometers land mass. The Municipality is located on the north shore of Lake Erie on the east shore of Lake St. Clair. Chatham-Kent is within one hour’s drive of Windsor, Sarnia and London Ontario. It is also within an hour’s drive of Michigan in the United States.
40 percent of the Municipality’s diverse population currently lives in the former City of Chatham, with the balance of the residents residing in 11 other communities and agricultural areas. These other communities, Wallaceburg (11,000), Blenheim (4,800), Tilbury (4,600), Ridgetown (3,400), Dresden (2,600), Wheatley (1,700), Bothwell (1000), and Thamesville (1000) are distributed throughout the Municipality.
The Chatham-Kent has one of the mildest climates in Canada. We get our share of winter, but it’s not as severe as it can get in other parts of Canada.
