Diversity in Chatham-Kent

Chatham-Kent is a thriving multicultural municipality that welcomes people of all backgrounds. We are home to a wide variety of Cultural Communities, all of which can help newcomers to settle, establish networks of friends, and access informational resources.

Whether it’s the Caribbean-Canadian festival and parade, Chinese New Year celebrations, a performance by the Portuguese dance ensemble, or a dinner-dance at the Filipino Club, there’s always something to do.

Chatham-Kent is steeped in African-Canadian heritage and history.

The area played a vital role in the Underground Railroad during the American Civil War, when thousands of slaves escaped to freedom in Canada. Visitors can learn more at Uncle Tom’s Cabin in Dresden, a world-renowned museum and at the Chatham-Kent Black Historical Society’s Heritage Room.

We also have an active francophone community, centered in the town of Pain Court and extending to Grande Pointe and Tilbury. Government offices, many local business and other organizations offer services in French.

Can’t find the cultural group that you’re looking for? Well why not start one of your own? Visit our How to Start a Cultural Community Page for more details.
