NAFTA Super Highway

Canada, the United States and Mexico established the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in January 1994 and formed the world’s largest free trade area. NAFTA was established to facilitate cross-border movement of goods and services, eliminate barriers and promote competition.
The North American Free Trade Agreement and the Super Highway
The NAFTA Super Highway provides a seamless link connecting the major commercial centres in Canada, the United States and Mexico. Nearly 75% of trade between Canada and the US is by truck. Highway 401, which bisects Chatham-Kent, is the main trade route between Canada and the United States and the Windsor/Detroit border. A second route to the US at Sarnia/Port Huron is linked through Highway 402, approximately 30 minutes north of Chatham-Kent.
Border crossings have been streamlined through the use of high-tech monitoring devices that allow inspected vehicles to pass through the border crossings more quickly.
