Hydro One is a regulated electrical distribution company that provides safe and reliable electricity at competitive rates to rural customers of Chatham-Kent.

Electricity rates are applicable according to one of the following customer classifications: Residential year-round, Seasonal residential, Farm, Industrial/Commercial, Industrial Commercial General Service, Industrial/Commercial Sub-transmission and then to one of the following density zones: Urban Density, High Density and Normal Density.

Delivery charges vary according to the classification or type of electric service you have.

Natural Gas

Union Gas is an integrated natural gas storage, transmission and distribution company serving about 1.3 million residential, commercial and industrial customers in more than 400 communities in Northern, Southwestern and Eastern Ontario.

The company also provides storage and transportation services to other utilities and energy market participants in Ontario, Quebec and the United States. Union Gas is a Spectra Energy Company.

Natural gas customers can choose to purchase their gas from Union Gas or from a retail energy marketer. Certain customers can purchase their supply directly from a gas supplier and contract with Union Gas to use its transmission, storage and distribution system to deliver gas to their places of business. Customers interested in more information on the purchase options available for natural gas may contact Union Gas directly.

Water & Wastewater

All of our systems are in compliance with the regulations mandated by the Ministry of the Environment.

Employees conduct over 22,000 tests a year for sewage and over 10,000 samples a year in water to ensure that Chatham-Kent meets or exceeds all provincial standards and to ensure quality.

We currently employ approximately 50 employees. All of our staff are certified with the appropriate certification for each facility which may include water treatment, water distribution, wastewater treatment and wastewater collection. They also receive over 40 hours of training per year in their field as mandated by the Ministry of the Environment.

In addition to our operation and maintenance functions, we also respond to petition requests, construct water and sewer mains as required and are involved in water and wastewater facility upgrades and expansions where needed.

Waste Disposal

Chatham-Kent manages the residential waste and recycling curbside collection contract as well as the rural waste and recycling transfer stations. The Municipality also offers limited waste collection for industrial, commercial and institutional properties. Waste collection and recycling services for multi-residential (six or more dwelling units), industrial and commercial properties are typically provided by private waste management companies.

The Municipality operates a bi-weekly curbside recycling service in 21 communities. Recycling for most rural residents is provided at least once per week at 8 transfer stations located throughout Chatham-Kent.

Leaf and Yard Depots:

Chatham-Kent operates 8 depots for all leaf and yard waste (including brush) at least once per week throughout the Municipality.

Disposal by Private Sector:

Private waste management companies deliver waste to two Chatham-Kent landfill sites for a fee.
